How to undo anything TuneBit does

A repair tool you cannot reverse is a gamble. So TuneBit takes a Windows System Restore point before it changes system settings — automatically, switched on out of the box — and keeps its own copy of everything it edits. This page is the undo instructions, in the order you would need them.

Before the change

The restore point is automatic

A System Restore point is Windows’ own snapshot of your settings, drivers, registry and installed programs. TuneBit creates one before it changes any of them:

  • The One-Click Tune-Up takes one before it starts, named TuneBit one-click tune-up.
  • The repair kit takes one before running the repairs you ticked. The checkbox that controls it, Create a restore point first, sits on that screen and is ticked already.
  • The registry cleaner takes one every time it cleans, named TuneBit registry clean — and exports the keys it is about to remove as well.

The master switch is in Settings, and it is on when you install. You can turn it off; the per-tool backups in the table below still happen if you do, but the one-step way back does not, so we would rather you left it alone.

Windows has to be willing. Restore points only work if System Protection is turned on for your system drive, and on some machines — particularly ones a manufacturer or an earlier “optimizer” has been through — it is switched off. When that happens TuneBit says so in the log, in as many words: Restore point not created. It is worth reading that line before you press anything else. To turn protection on: press Start, type Create a restore point, open it, select your C: drive, click Configure, choose Turn on system protection and give it a few gigabytes.

Putting the whole machine back

This is the one to use when something is wrong and you are not sure which change did it. It takes about ten minutes, most of which is the PC restarting on its own.

  1. Press Start, type Create a restore point and open the result. A window called System Properties appears.
  2. Click the System Restore… button, then Next.
  3. You get a list of restore points with dates. Find the one named TuneBit and something — that is the state your PC was in before TuneBit ran. If the list looks short, tick Show more restore points underneath it.
  4. Optional, and reassuring: with it selected, click Scan for affected programs. Windows lists exactly what will change if you go ahead.
  5. Click Next, then Finish, then Yes to the confirmation. Leave the PC alone — it restarts by itself and tells you when it is done.

Your files are not involved. System Restore puts Windows settings, drivers, the registry and installed programs back to how they were. Your documents, photos, music, email and downloads are not touched by it, in either direction — it will not delete them and it will not bring back ones that were deleted.

If the PC will not start at all

  • Hold Shift while you click Restart on the sign-in screen, if you can get that far.
  • Otherwise, switch the PC off with the power button three times while Windows is loading. The fourth start goes into recovery on its own.
  • From there: Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore, and carry on from step 3 above.
The surgical version

Putting one thing back

Rolling the whole machine back also undoes the changes that worked. When you know which change you want reversed, TuneBit keeps its own copy of it — and those copies stay on the PC even after you uninstall TuneBit, until you delete them yourself.

What TuneBit backs up for each kind of change, and how to reverse it

Registry cleaning A restore point, plus a .reg export of every key it is about to touch, in a timestamped folder. Open %LocalAppData%\TuneBit\backups, find the reg- folder with the right date and double-click a .reg file to put those keys back.
Driver removal or replacement An export of the driver package before it is touched. The export sits in %LocalAppData%\TuneBit\driver-backups. In Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Update driver → Browse my computer and point it at that folder.
Hosts file cleanup A copy of the original file as hosts.bak, saved beside it. Both files live in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. Rename hosts.bak back to hosts, replacing the new one.
Startup programs Disabling is a reversible switch — nothing is deleted unless you choose Delete. Reopen the startup manager in TuneBit and switch the entry back on. Windows Task Manager's Startup apps tab does the same job.
Privacy and telemetry tweaks The original Windows value for every setting it changes. Each item on the privacy screen has a Restore action that writes the Windows default back exactly as it was.
Windows services The screen shows each service's current start type before you change anything. Set the start type back on the same screen, or roll the restore point back — service configuration is part of what a restore point captures.

%LocalAppData% is a shortcut Windows understands: paste it into the File Explorer address bar, or into the Start menu, and it takes you to C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local.

The honest part

What no restore point can bring back

A restore point protects Windows, not your files. Deleting is the one thing on this page that is final, so it is worth being exact about which tools delete:

The four tools that delete rather than change

  • Junk cleanup and the duplicate finder delete files. They are gone, not sitting in the Recycle Bin.
  • Browser cleanup clears caches, cookies and history. Cookies going means being signed out of websites again.
  • Emptying the Recycle Bin does what it says.
  • Removing preinstalled apps uninstalls them. Most can be reinstalled free from the Microsoft Store, but anything they had stored locally goes with them.

Which is why those tools work the way they do: each one scans first and shows you the full list, with sizes, and nothing is deleted until you have looked at it and pressed the button. Untick anything you are unsure about — TuneBit skips it and says so in the log.

Every run leaves a record. The log panel writes each change as it happens, and any diagnostic run exports to a self-contained HTML report you can keep or hand to whoever asks. If you need to know what a run did three weeks ago, that is where it is written down.

Three more questions people ask

Do all these restore points fill up my drive?

Windows caps how much space System Restore may use and deletes the oldest points to stay under it, so the pile does not grow forever. You choose the cap yourself in the same Create a restore point → Configure dialog, and can clear the lot from there if you want the space back.

I turned the restore point off. Am I on my own?

No. The per-tool backups in the table above are separate and still happen: the registry exports, the driver exports and the hosts file copy are all written whatever that setting says. What you lose is the single-step way to put everything back at once.

Does uninstalling TuneBit take my backups with it?

No, and deliberately. Uninstalling removes the program and leaves %LocalAppData%\TuneBit where it is, backups and all, because the moment you most want a backup is often just after you have given up on the tool that made it. Delete that folder yourself when you are certain you are finished with it.
